Released August 19, "The Forsaken" is the second novel, after "omicron", of Michael Hirsch.
Saint-Germain-des-Pres, 1954. Jean Giono preparing to succeed at the Academy Goncourt Colette, Simone de Beauvoir is poised to win the prestigious award of the same name and during that time, Gerard Cohen, courier Gallimard, must go like every week the doctor Destouches alias Louis Ferdinand Celine to give him a few wrinkles.
But instead of taking the road to Meudon, Gerard loitering and lost in a world where reality merge, memories and dreams ...
" As its name suggests, the environment is at the center. It does not touch the edges, carefully avoids any contact with the periphery. Centrifugal force is his only anxiety.
When scattered, only to better fill the available land. Episodically, he gathered together in a geographical point that, just for a moment, becomes the epicenter of the microcosm. "p.16
" The Forsaken "or the story of a day behind the scenes of the publishing community.
An environment that Gerard, the narrator, knows well since he grew up there and there working with the support of his father. The young man runs through an identity crisis due to its reluctance to enter into the mold as the question of his Jewish origins, origins that it can hardly appropriated in this opulent France after the war where we must view all black and white.
" Where did you wonder constantly comment on my character? Problem is the glass half empty. Everything is a matter of perspective. If my mother was Jewish I could be the worst miscreants without provided any ambiguity.
Consequently, I'd still too much for those who are not at all and enough for those who are completely done.
I spent the first part of my life to apologize of some and the second to justify myself to others. "p.51
Gerard talks about the events that deeply influenced his youth, memories mainly related to the exodus during which he started in danger several times, and often find resonance in its current concerns .
He also mentioned his meeting with the writer Celine, the "theorist of hate" who reminds him of his discomfort vis-à-vis its origins and exerts a strange sensation formed by a mixture of fascination and disgust.
" is a man defeated in the sense that men spend half their lives to build and disassemble everything else. The type is the image of his chicken coop. This is an abandoned project, or rather a building struck by lightning. His graying hair is pulled back.
mark parallel furrows his brow. He wears a succession of duds as stacked layers of an onion, knitted sweater, cardigan jacket and finally a shepherd sheepskin. "p.150
Both say right now, I really fell in love with this novel! I liked enter in the skin of this character stuck between two labels, share the anger and doubts of the man who struggles to give a direction to his own existence.
I discovered a neat, enriched with words that you feel carefully chosen (if not weighed) and details that far from burdening the narrative contribute to account for an often admired the outside but decidedly lackluster if one believes the author.
" The rivalry is a game that inspire us all cheers up. It is a war of positions that we play in a perimeter restricted field of operation extending into two districts at the most.
Each places his pawns, intrigue, rival advertising and puffery. Giono's friend with the heart of the machine medals, Gallimard's future now seems assured for years to come. Is that we need these rewards chocolate, these congratulations absurd. The world works like this, ludicrous that our world is thought Universal and obsesses us for years now. Sad consolation. "p.114
