Toxic -

Published in 1964 and reissued in 2009, "Toxic" is, as its title suggests, the journal kept by Francoise Sagan at a rehab.
In 1957, writer then aged 22 was on a roll. His first two novels, "Bonjour Tristesse" and "A certain smile," a resounding success. But a tragic event
just blacken this pretty picture. Suffered a serious car accident and forced to remain bedridden for several months, Françoise Sagan uses the palfium 875, a derivative of morphine administered by doctors to reduce pain. The product
addiction is such that the writer is transferred to a rehab clinic where she will stay a week, the time of writing this paper.

Sagan was only 22 years old when she wrote this journal. Knew it already, at this point, his addiction to the drug would continue throughout his life?
One thing is sure, the woman holding the newspaper is afraid. Fear itself, fear of not being able to cope, fear of loneliness.
" But it seems to me that now my only happy relations with myself, apart from other beings and the few moments of elation or well-being that nature provides, may not be as literary.
So the writers fall into the same trap as accountants, industrial and other morons working.
To meet later in the grip of what solitude inactive: it makes us shudder.
I understand that Mr and others persist in stuttering in the reviews of tourism.
After all, when you have no one to kiss, and that loneliness is equivalent to a job that no longer ask you, life must be sad. "

For one week, she wanders the corridors of the clinical picture of a caged animal, regretting his past freedom.
She knows that the Parisian nights, alcohol, drugs, speeding it as necessary as dangerous. Did she need to feel closer to death, to put in constant danger in order to enjoy life?
To escape boredom as this prégnant feeling of suffocation, she reads Apollinaire, Celine, Chateaubriand, Rimbaud, Proust, Michelet. In
prey to insomnia as a lack of concentration induced by the lack, it details the nature, other patients and is seen through them.

"I spying on me: I am a beast who watches another beast inside me. "

"Toxic" is not really what one might call a comprehensive book on throes of addiction but It appears mainly as a testimony to better understand the personality tortured Sagan and tumultuous universe within which both his life and his work.
Both fragile unreasonable but extremely lucid, Sagan does not in place. If every thought is meant concise, flying rapidly giving way to another, illustrations by Bernard Buffet characterized by a pencil pressed hard and shapes add to the distress of this woman faces herself.

Well, that's fine. is what interests me. I'll write a new one. The trouble is that the very idea of "enterprise" my heart is contracting. It's raining. "Ah, life is slow and that hope is violent." Ah Apollinaire is beautiful. Ah I'm bored. Run away? Maybe.

I just catch myself lying half on my chair, arms behind his head, pensively smoking in offhand position of the writer healthy reflective ( to) (on) the last lines.
First position "at ease" probably since I'm in this room where all my attitudes are leaking, or on my bed shelter.

Sagan The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood

Published in 1985 and translated into French two years later, "The Handmaid's Tale" is the sixth installment of the novelist, poet and critic Margaret Atwood to whom we owe such titles as "The Edible Woman," "The Blind Assassin" or " The Last Man. "

" The Handmaid's Tale "is as Defred's testimony, a woman in the prime of life who like many of his fellows is held in a household located in the Republic of Gilead.
At the head of each household is a Commander with his wife. At that time crossed by pollution and alarming birth rate, the mission of the Handmaid's Tale is to serve their country by putting their body at the disposal of the Commander.
Women and Having all of their rights denied to be reduced to mere instruments of procreation ...

It accurately describes the hanging of the community turned in on itself, and hyper-organized hierarchical (color codes, ration cards, coded language), a microcosm in which each individual undergoes the constant pressure of being terminated for any breach of regulations.
Eyes are everywhere. Everything is measured, watched, subject to controls. Lovers of "1984" or "Equilibrium" will see the same terror vis-à-vis power wishing to contribute to "welfare".
Humiliated, indoctrinated, dehumanized and reduced to their simplest device ... reproductive, each these women aspire to become pregnant Commander, a situation that would allow them to escape the status of "anti-women" and the Colonies.

" I used to think my body as an instrument of pleasure, or means of transport, or a tool to fulfill my wishes.
I could use it to run, push buttons of various natures, to make things happen. There were limits, but yet my body was light, single, solid, was one with me.
Now the flesh has a different way. I am a cloud, frozen around a central object, shaped like a pear, which is harder and more real than I am, and shining, red, inside its transparent envelope. In this object there is a space, huge as the night sky, dark and curved like him, but a dark red rather than black.
The pinheads of light to swell, then curl sparkle, countless as the stars.
Each month there is a moon, a giant, round, heavy, an omen. It goes, stops, takes its course and disappears and I see the despair fall upon me like a famine. Feel
this vacuum again, and again. I listen to my heart, wave after wave, salt and red, which continues relentlessly chanting time. "p.127

The pressure generated by this control of the female body is such that it arouses much envy among one and other. In the race for the baby, jealousy takes over as brides maids unable to give themselves a child of their husband.
Defred tells processions, secret, clandestine meetings, prohibitions, punishment, days of birth, those intended to "fulfill their biological destiny," the newspaper these women deprived of knowledge, love and desire.
She also returned to his past which included a friend, a husband and a daughter whom she has more news, so many memories that allow him to keep his head above water by clinging to the little things to hang on.

Because the narrative is delivered by Defred, the elements are coming as they (re) appear in his memories.
The player enters the heart through Gilead Defred own eyes, which allows the author to focus his story on what happens inside and behind the scenes at the house occupied by women.
A war is on but the information is voluntarily filtered, which inevitably leads to a lack of contextualization (not disturbing to me because ins and outs of this totalitarian regime contained in the epilogue).

I will not beat around the bush, I just loved this novel from beginning to end! I was both appalled and fascinated by the fate of Defred and many women relegated to simple matrices. The author
sows-and detail as to measure in a colorful style, visual. Descriptions are often troubling because plausible. Admittedly, the author deftly combines the indelible marks left by history to current problems to instil fear of such a situation emerges under another form.

" Sometimes I can not think of myself, my body, not seeing my skeleton, what I am, as seen by an electron. A cradle of life, made of bones and internal dangers, deformed proteins , crystals failed, chipped like glass.
women were taking medications, pills, the men sprayed the trees, the cows ate the grass, all that spicy piss flowed in rivers. Not to mention the explosion of atomic plants along the San Andreas fault, without human error, at the time of earthquakes, and the mutant strain of syphilis, no mold could not stop.
Some have done themselves, have been tightly sewn with catgut or ravage with chemicals. How could they said Aunt Lydia, oh, how could they do such a thing? Jezebels! Despise the gifts of God! "p.189

In this world where everything is prohibited, every sensation evoked seems to take on another dimension, the more exacerbated its subject is often scarce and dangerous.
The narrator attempts to put into words everything she sees and experiences and feels through his words all the restraint it must demonstrate to suppress his emotions and desires.
No need to add to Defred layer. If the tone has become more neutral, cautious, the facts speak for herself and descriptions betray a solitude that one can only sympathize.

A big big big favorite that I recommend to all not only women but also to every reader interested in the insidious progression and evolution of a totalitarian regime that revolves around a goat -a power outlet and unscrupulous.
A must read!

Psychopolis and other news - Ian McEwan

"Psychopolis and Other Stories" is a new set of 3 from the first book of British writer Ian McEwan, "First Love, Last Rites" reissued under the title "Under the sheets and other news "published in 1975.

"Masks" evokes the relationship that Henry was a boy of 10 years, and his aunt Mina, a former stage actress who at the death of his sister was entrusted the education of his nephew.
Raised by this fantastic woman and even completely frappadingue Henry nevertheless appreciates his talents as a storyteller and actress and folds in all its extravagance, accepting every night on his return from school ritual of donning the costume that she was prepared to spend the evening. Mina
But when asked to dress as a girl, Henry refuses to play the game ..

"Pornography" is the story of O'Byrne, a confident man who runs a pornographic bookstore with his brother and is having an affair with two women who do not know but work as nurses in the same hospital .
O'Byrne will be a victim of his trickery and learn the hard way that this kind of betrayal may cost him dearly ...

"Psychopolis" evokes the fates of several characters, 3 men and a woman, who will gather together in one evening at the outcome for the least strange.

Having heard much of Ian McEwan in recent months on the blogosphere, I was tempted by this book to get acquainted with the author.
After reading, I can now say that this idea was not my best.

The author takes us into a universe in which the impulses (often of a scatological but not only ...) and power relations dominant-dominated govern the behavior of his characters. The aunt who shows an unhealthy taste for disguises to impose his nephew to the man about to undergo the vengeance of his two mistresses still manages to bend. All characters have a tendency "natural" (meaning that they never called into question their actions) to perversion and disobedience.
result is an unhealthy atmosphere, glaucous perfectly provocative writing made by the author.
Unfortunately, I found these characters a little too "zombies." They seem to move his head down, running to their doom without asking any questions and without any morality that does stands in their way.
malaise has taken hold of me during my reading, but it will be quickly forgotten ...

" Mary worked in a feminist bookshop in Venice which it also owned shares. That's when I met her at lunchtime, the day after my arrival in Los Angeles.
The same evening we were lovers and, quite soon after, friends. The following Friday, I kept chained by one foot in my bed all weekend.
was, she told me, a something she "had to do to get free." I remember (Later, in a bar full of people) snatching a solemn promise not to listen if she claimed to be detached.
Anxious to please my new friend, I bought a nice chain and padlock. With brass screws, I fixed a ring in the wood of my bed, and the matter was settled.
few hours later, she wanted her freedom at any cost and, despite some embarrassment, I got up, took a shower, I dressed, I put on my slippers, and I brought him a large skillet to urinate. "p.93

How Do You Know If You Have Lices

First Love - Joyce Carol Oates is

Published in 1996 and translated into French in 1998, "First Love" is a short novel by Joyce Carol Oates, a prolific American writer (to whom we owe "Blonde" and "Delicious rot" ), also known under the pseudonyms Rosamond Smith and Lauren Kelly.

For some reason which is unknown, the little Josie left his hometown with his mother to live with her great-aunt Esther, who occupies the house at the Reverend Ramsonville.
The atmosphere is not as fun in Burkhardt. Josie's cousin, Jared Jr., a young seminarian, is visiting for the summer and is the subject of attention from his grandmother.
Barely tolerated in the house, Josie and her mother are requested to keep away the young man. But one day, while her mother is increasingly absent, Josie meets this strange cousin to the river ...

Just arrived in her new place of life, Josie made the frightening encounter with a black snake, quite evocative episode for the rest of the story.
Josie poses questions to his mother on the family history but still want answers evasive.
Left to itself, the girl suffers from loneliness fueled by the silence in the house and by the absence and the unspoken mother. This solitude is seen broken by his encounter with his cousin Jared Jr., a young man 14 years her senior who takes advantage of his naivety and the fascination he exercises over his cousin, while believing that she is willing .
terrified he do wrong, Josie is resolved to stay good and keep the secret that unites Jared

Jr. is the second time I read the author and I found myself feeling a sense of unease bordering on disgust.
And yet something urged me well to turn the pages, up to make me doubt my own sanity ...
no doubt that like "Delicious rots" , "First Love" evokes the same dark theme of the encounter between good and evil, childhood perverted and become hypnotized by descent unhealthy adults.
If the story is delivered to us by Josie, sometimes it seems to be talking to itself through you - referring to those moments of fear that would have given him walk away - or that about Jared recall to his memory.

" If you enter in the marsh , you betray your body. You were not yourself, you had to name you, her little . You were surrounded by imperceptible sucking noises. Grunts toads. Similar to the grunts of a man - you had heard men grunting and whooping, whooping and grunting, long time ago that, while you were not supposed to listen. You knew what it was, already in those days: the animal trying to escape pulp strength of its box. Oozing, bubbling, gushing at last.

Good. But now you need to wash . Jared quickly rinse your fingers sticky in the river, Jared sprayed water your face moist sweat. You wanted to say I love you , Jared , but it catch you by the neck and you plunge your face in the water you left in the mouth a bitter metallic taste.

Until you choke on flailing your arms pitiful, like a goose in the middle of drowning, and that you have mercy. Oh, for heaven's sake! Nobody is going to kill you, why do you think anyone takes the trouble? "p.57

The use of adjectives and symbols strongly connoted reflects an unhealthy atmosphere reinforced by the actions of Jared Jr.
Religion has an important place in the narrative. Only male authority figure among women, Professor perverse "Delicious rot" has given way to the man of God, a young seminarian immoral and without scruples who takes a perverse pleasure to judge others and impose the worst punishment, always ready to discuss the atonement by unorthodox if I may say so. If the summary
evokes an erotic book, I call it pedophilia as it appears that this "first love" (yet another ambiguous title which the author has the secret) is far from idyllic ...

do not know if the fact of having loved this story makes me someone shot of infrequent but it is certain that Joyce Carol Oates has a psychological insight supported by a percussive style that allow it to install an atmosphere that is cold in the back, up to continue the drive until the last line.
is why I am resolved to continue my discovery of this writer:)

Maryl Monroe Peircing

really looks like paradise - John Cheever

"It really looks like paradise" was the last novel, published in 1982 and translated into French in 2009 , the American novelist and short story John Cheever.

One day an old man named Lemuel Sears back in the village of Janice to skate on the pond Beasley. Then he realizes that it is now held by a discharge powerful criminal organization. Then he launched legal proceedings to stop this pollution source, he falls madly in love with Renee, a realtor who has the curious habit of frequenting churches for reasons obscure and fun to turn the old man ass on the pretext that he knows nothing about women.
Meanwhile, two couples, Salazzo and Logan, embark on a neighbor dispute.

Beasley's Pond is for Sears a little corner of paradise that is ready to defend. If the story opens with the discovery of the old man, the author departs readily subject to dwell on the complicated relationship qu'entretiennent Sears and Renee and then forking over disputes between two parents, of first for a dead dog story, a carillon and then finally on the tail of a fish at a checkout 10 items.
If the author likes to walk the reader a portrait to another, this is obviously no coincidence since each protagonist wants involved in one way or another in the matter Sears occupies.

This post will be short as much as to say it to go, I'm absolutely unable to get into this novel. If there is ultimately links between the different characters, the feeling of being on the rooster to the donkey does not, however, left me, I found the characters unconvincing and inconsistent, too many digressions (the part of fishing between Sears and the elevator boy gay, SIGNED?) and the story itself made me die of boredom. The only thing I ever so little attention is the point of view (still small) of the author, expressed through the character of Sears, about the importance of ecology and preservation of nature.

" Why celebrate a landfill, why try to describe such an aberration? There lay scraps of a society inclined to nomadism, but who had renounced his taste for objects that are ports. Most people who wander around the world develop a culture of tents and saddles, but that was gifted by nomads with a passion for bedsteads gigantic and enormous refrigerators.
There was a conflict between mobility - the wandering-and the love of permanence that had led to chaos in the lake of Beasley. "p.20

Fragments - Marilyn Monroe

"Fragments", published in October 2010, is a compilation of poems, letters and intimate texts written by American actress Marilyn Monroe between 1943 and 1962.

I received this book in hard collector for Christmas and at my request because I was eager to discover another facet of this woman confined mainly to its status as a figurehead of actress-girlfriend and therefore inevitably by some decerebrate .
I expected a lot from this book and I must say that I was a bit disappointed by what I found.
Admittedly, this is a beautiful book. The collector's version offers an attractive red binding and superb photos printed on glossy paper.
The layout allows air smooth playback and everyone will appreciate the concern of the publisher to offer each of these fragments in a bilingual version while specifying that the translations were sometimes subject to interpretation clearly marked in red text and left to the discretion of the reader.

Well, that said, is that there be exactly in this book?
Again, the publisher said he had tried to include the best Marilyn's writings over time by classifying them in chronological order.
The book opens with a text written at the age of 17 years and recalling her marriage with James Dougherty, who allowed him to escape the orphanage.
This text already contains all the premises of a woman whom one feels disappointed by love, a shy, fragile and deeply insecure trying to cling to life by trying to grasp the meaning and 'y define its role.

Whether in his poems or in his notes, Marilyn Monroe evokes great fears: the fear of disappointing for a role, not to be intellectually at the height of her husband Arthur Miller, age or ending up in a mental asylum as was the case with his mother and grandmother.

" everyone's childhood is replayed all the time. No wonder nobody knows each other or can not fully understand. I do not know if I reach this conclusion with any drop - or if for the first time maybe I'm connected with reality -
how do we know the suffering of the early years of each other without talking about everything he drags with him as at best a wide margin is necessary for each other and yet how it's unhealthy to bear.
I think the best thing is to love and accept bravely - as much as we can bear. "p.155

Through notes written on different media (calendar, letterhead, hotel notebooks barely begun, leaflets, page directory) to self-motivation, the young woman was trying to channel their fears. It is not uncommon that it speaks of concentration and discipline on his behavior on the set as in her private life.
If writing has a predominantly chaotic appearance, the reader discovers However, a woman of extreme lucidity, capable of emotional intelligence that drives most of the time jumping into disarray, a victim of its sensitivity all on edge.

" After a year of analysis. With the help assistance. Using. I feel that life is approaching when all I want is to die. Cri - You started and finished in the air, but where was the middle? " p.163

I was particularly touched by a letter written during his confinement a year before his death in which she evokes the dehumanization that experienced by patients.

We are light years of the icon that appeared yet so sure of herself on screen!
This woman appears depressed, perfectionist, always late, kneaded jitters complexed and intellectually so that most of his writings, far from evoking its report to the body, are primarily written notes to herself, the reminder to continuously improve.

I turn to the subject of my disappointment. The book is crossed by numerous pictures showing Marilyn in writing or in conversation with leading writers. So I was expecting
to find in this book of reading notes and reflections on his many encounters with men of letters. Now the young woman took the pen to be particularly recall his moods when morale was down and as she said herself, she did not read in a crisis and trying to find all the answers before her.
So I was disappointed by this false sense of demands, the desire to rehabilitate intellectual clearing the many photos in the book and who, failing to illustrate the words of Marilyn Monroe, just "fill holes" .
Nevertheless, I really appreciated discover the bits of life of this complex woman even if I sometimes seemed to lack some keys to power all understand.
But, in the words of Marilyn Monroe:

" Only fragments of one day affect us fragments of others. The truth of someone in reality it is the truth of someone. One can only share the fragment acceptable to know each other. Thus it is almost always alone.
As is the case clearly in nature - at best perhaps our comprehension Could he find the solitude of another. "P.45

The book of my mother - Albert Cohen

Published in 1954," The Book of My Mother "is a novel by Albert Cohen, Swiss writer particularly known for his major work "Belle du Seigneur."

In this book could have been called "The book on my mother," the author recalls the first woman in his life, the one and only, the mother sweet and sacrificial throughout his life devoted himself to the happiness of his family, even put his life as a woman altogether.
From intimate details showing their journey from arrival at Marseilles, the author discusses the symbiotic relationship for this mother-son: the isolation and lack of social life because of their Eastern origins contributed to their decline one on the another.

" There was also a cake shop where she listened to the conversation a little well-dressed ladies, while eating a cake, comfort the lonely. She participated as she could, merely humbly these poor entertainment always a spectator, not an actress.
His life was still going to the movies alone. These characters on the screen, it was admitted into their company. She cried to the woes of these beautiful Christian ladies.
It was an isolated all his life, a shy child whose head was too fat stuck eagerly to the window of the bakery's office. I do not know why I tell the sad life of my mother. It is perhaps for revenge. "p.59

Both spent much time together between the theater and walking in summer and when he went to study at the University of Geneva, took his mother used to visit him few weeks a year.
Each trip was a celebration and an opportunity for a mother to watch over her son. Watching each of her returns, she could not fall asleep before you know it comfortably.
admiring, naive, stupid, greedy, always seeking the approval of the overprotected son, this woman at once so present for his son and so little for itself can only wait.

hard not to give in to tears when reading such a tribute. The author multiplies anecdotes, happy little life moments that suggest any complicity of a mother and son but quickly faced the grim reality that this woman is older and carries with it the childhood of his son.

"Crying his mother is crying her childhood. The man wants a child, wants it back, and he loves his mother more as he gets older, it because his mother is his childhood. I was a child, I am not anymore and I can not believe it. "p.33

"
Yes, go to sleep, sleep has the advantages death without its minor inconvenience. Let us set in the cozy coffin. I wish I could take off, as the toothless his dentures he puts in a glass of water near his bed, remove my brain of its box, remove my heart beating too, poor bugger that's too much his duty, off my brain and my heart and swimming, these two poor billionaires in solutions refreshing while I sleep like a baby that I'll never be. There are few humans and suddenly the world is desert. "p.99

The author expresses his regret and tries to forgive himself for not having always managed to make this woman the love she lavished on him, often preferring the company of mistresses or leaving aside the high society he frequented, for fear that if this woman simply does not make him ashamed.
You will understand, "The Book of My Mother" is both a declaration of love for a son to his mother but also the confession of a man suddenly become an orphan.
reader tips easily from one emotion to another as the amused tone of the story always ends up giving the place with tragic when the author realizes that his memories a thing of the past.

" pain, it is not always expressed with noble words. It can come out of sad little jokes, little old grinning from the windows of my dead eyes. " p.136

" Having pain is live is to be, it will be yet. "p.141

" The Book of My Mother "is a mixed history of complicity and missed appointments told by a broken man that nostalgia prevents him from continuing to live a pure miracle that I can than you!

"The terrible from the dead, their gestures of life in our memory. For then, they lived horribly and we do not understand anything. "p.85

"
The memories, this terrible life that is not life and that hurts. "p.164

"The book of my mother" was my sixth reading under the Challenge Favourites organized by Theoma. This was the favorite chosen by Calypso, as saying that I fully agree!

Another opinion: Theoma
